Arson suspected in Amherstview school bus fire

Ontario Provincial Police and the Loyalist Fire Department are investigating a suspicious fire that completely destroyed a parked school bus in the evening of Saturday, March 24th.

OPP and Loyalist Fire were dispatched to the parking lot of Fairfield Public School on Kildare Avenue in Amherstview at around 10:30 p.m. after receiving calls regarding the large vehicle fire. Many throughout the neighbourhood recalled hearing three very loud explosions as the vehicle’s tires burst from the fire’s heat.

There was some minor leakage of diesel, according to a firefighter on scene, but no damage to any other nearby property.

There were also no injuries in the incident, confirmed the Limestone District School Board.

Several witnesses reported seeing a suspect spreading what appeared to be gasoline near the bus and subsequently lighting it on fire. Other neighbours also reported seeing multiple youths running from the scene at the time of the fire. OPP are following up on those reports.

Loyalist Fire crews quickly knocked down the fire once on scene and the bus was towed away shortly thereafter.
