Discarded cigarettes suspected causes of large grass fires

OPP are reminding motorists to be mindful and properly discard their cigarettes after several large grass fires in the area.

On April 11th, 2018 at approximately 3:30 p.m. fire units from Front of Yonge, Athens and Elizabethtown fire units responded to a large grass fire on Temperance Lake Road and another on Graham Lake Road.

Members of the Leeds and the Thousand Islands Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police also responded and provided support for the two active grass fires.

Both fires caused significant damage to property and almost saw an evacuation of residents in the area. Fire departments were able to get both fires under control and extinguish them fully. Investigators believe the cause of the fires to be from vehicle occupants carelessly discarding their burning cigarettes out the window.

The warnings follow on the heels of several full or partial burn bans put in place by area fire departments due to dry grass conditions.
