In the past two weeks officers with the Napanee Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police have received public complaints about a male and female stopping motorists and approaching pedestrians asking for money for gas.
The male and female have been reported to be knocking on the windows of motorists at the corner of Centre Street and Richmond Boulevard and approaching pedestrians in parking lots in that area offering to exchange jewelry for cash. The story they give is; “my vehicle is out of gas or broken down on the highway and we have to get home.”
The story is untrue and the jewelry is fake.
In addition, the Leeds Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police has also received a public complaint about two males approaching a patron of the Shorelines Casino Thousand Islands asking for money for gas.
OPP say the males approached the complainant in the parking lot offering to exchange gold jewelry for cash. The story they give is similar to the one given in Napanee. The complainant purchased rings and necklaces and then had them evaluated to find that the jewellery was in fact imitation gold.
OPP would like to hear from anyone who has been approached or has information related to this couple. Please call Napanee OPP at 613-354-3369, Leeds OPP at 613-345-1790, or report anonymously at Crime Stoppers 1-800-222-8477 or online with tipsubmit.com.
