Two arrested for Picton cemetery vandalism

On Thursday June 20, 2018 around 8:30pm, officers with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Prince Edward Detachment were notified of extensive vandalism to gravestones and monuments at a Picton cemetery.

Sometime between 3:00pm and 7:30pm that day, numerous gravestones and monuments around sections “H” and “F” of the cemetery were damaged. The extent of the damage is undetermined at this point but estimated to be in the thousands of dollars.

On Wednesday July 18, 2018 following a month long investigation, members of the Prince Edward County OPP Community Street Crime Unit (CSCU) arrested two males for the vandalism to gravestones and monuments at the cemetery.

A 15 year old male from Kingston will appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on August 20, 2018 to answer to the charge of mischief over $5,000 contrary to the Criminal code of Canada section 430(3).

Also charged was a 17 year old male from Picton who will also appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on August 20, 2018 to answer to the charge of mischief over $5,000 contrary to the Criminal code of Canada section 430(3).

The Prince Edward County OPP would like to thank everyone for their assistance in regards to this incident.
